There are several striking modifications to the primary camera in the newly disclosed information about the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. Two lenses will be arranged vertically in this year's configuration. In addition to the camera lenses being closer to the chassis than in the past, an intriguing decision that supports Apple's growing ecosystem is also seen in the layout:
"While the angled position found on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus allowed bigger lenses in a similarly sized squarish camera panel, the vertical shape may mean the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus will be capable of a feature reserved for Pro models in the current series."
Apple Addresses iPhone 15 Problems
In the coming week or two, an unexpected update to iOS will be released to address a niggling issue with the iPhone 15 series. iOS 17.4 cannot be postponed, even if it will be a historic release. Consequently, in order to address issue updates related to text display, iOS 17.3.1 is being pushed out; delaying this release would mean delaying 17.4. That is not possible:
"iOS 17.4 must be released on schedule in order to comply with new laws. That is the Digital Markets Act, and even though it only applies to the 27 member states of the EU for the time being, it must be completed on time. Furthermore, Apple has to be prepared for distribution in the United States concurrently with the European Union, since it would not issue an update for one region and not another. Stated differently, delaying small updates like the latest iOS 17.3.1 now might have a disastrous impact on the major version that is scheduled for release next month.
Apple’s Foldable iPhone Can’t Find The Magic
Apple is steadfastly devoted to the slab design in public, even as the Android community explores and innovates in the foldable phone sector. Naturally, the R&D staff works independently, but according to a new story from The Information, Apple has the same difficulties as its rivals:
"...the hinge on an iPad-sized device would prevent the device from sitting flat on a table (though this concern hasn't stopped Apple from introducing substantial camera bumps on many of its tablets and all of its phones)." "...they're too thick when folded up; they're easily broken; they would cost more than non-foldable versions."
Touching Your MacBook
Although Apple has steadfastly resisted to include a touch screen in the MacBook, the absence of screen-based interaction is becoming increasingly problematic as macOS and iPadOS become more similar. Apple was given a patent this week for a gadget that resembles the Apple Pencil and is meant to be stored inside the MacBook and used to interact with the screen:
"The iPad and MacBook have one significant operating difference: a touchscreen. Although the trackpad can be used, it's not a very good option. Should Apple intend to incorporate the Apple Pencil inside the MacBook, this implies that a digitizer for the stylus and a touchscreen are in the works."
Apple’s Quiet AI Grab
With the release of the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro and Google's Android 14, Android manufacturers have made a major push into artificial intelligence with their most recent smartphones. However, the most recent Statista research indicates that Apple is quietly acquiring smaller AI startups to expand its corporate expertise and toolkits:
"It's clear that Apple has been pursuing AI breakthroughs in recent years. To strengthen its AI skills across a range of product lines, the internet giant has made a number of strategic acquisitions, including hiring personnel from AI startups. [...] By 2023, Apple will have acquired up to 32 AI startups—more than any other tech company. Google is behind Apple with 21, Meta with 18, and Microsoft with 17 in the total AI startup acquisition."

This week, there have been some issues with Apple Maps in Edinburgh, where I grew up. Things go awry when roads close and Apple Maps does not reflect the change. For instance, cars passing on what was formerly a road but is now a set of stairs:
A spokesman for the City of Edinburgh informed Fortune that although Apple had been urged to amend its GPS, Google had changed its system to reflect the closure of Greenside Lane to automobiles. To stop more accidents, the council put up a temporary barrier while it awaited confirmation that the maps had been revised."
